A recent poll conducted by ABC News/Ipsos reveals that nearly half of Americans believe former President Donald Trump should withdraw from the 2024 presidential race following his felony conviction last week. The poll, conducted between May 31 and June 1, found that 49% of respondents hold this view, while 37% believe he should continue his campaign, and 14% are undecided.
Trump’s conviction, stemming from 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels, has left a significant impact on public opinion. Half of the respondents in the poll (50%) believe that the guilty verdict in the hush money case was justified, while 27% disagree, and 23% remain uncertain.
Despite the legal troubles, Trump’s favorability ratings have seen minimal change since March. The poll indicates that 31% of respondents hold a favorable opinion of Trump, a slight increase from 29% previously. Interestingly, President Joe Biden’s favorability ratings remain within a similar range, with 32% favorability recorded in the recent poll compared to 33% in March.
A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted last week among Republican registered voters suggests that Trump’s conviction has influenced voter sentiment within his own party. Ten percent of Republican respondents stated that they are now less inclined to vote for Trump in future elections following his legal troubles.
The ABC News/Ipsos poll, conducted among 781 adults aged 18 and older, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
